Carter Herndon, Counseling Intern
Pronouns: she/her/hers
Hi there! I’m Carter, and I’m so glad you’re here!
I’m currently pursuing my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at NC State University (go Pack!), and earned my undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia (Wahoowa!) in Cognitive Science and Economics.
I welcome clients of all ages and am currently practicing under the supervision of Juliet.
You might be here because something feels off. Maybe you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure about where you’re headed. Maybe you’re noticing patterns – anxious thoughts that won’t quiet down, emotions that feel heavy or confusing, or coping strategies that aren’t working anymore. You might feel like you’re going through the motions, disconnected from yourself, unsure of your purpose or the direction your life is taking. If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone – and you don’t have to figure it out on your own.
My approach is grounded in creating a safe, judgment-free space – one where you can take a breath, be fully yourself, and explore at your own pace. There’s no pressure to dive into the deep end right away. We’ll move slowly and intentionally, building trust and safety, and honoring whatever you’re ready to share. We’ll also take time to explore what truly matters to you. What do you value? What kind of life feels meaningful now? When you’re ready, we can take small steps toward a more connected and authentic version of that life.
I believe growth begins when we stop avoiding and start turning inward – with compassion and curiosity. That journey can be uncomfortable at times, but I’ve seen (and felt!) the transformation that can come from doing this work. It can shift how we relate to ourselves, others, and the world around us.
When I’m not seeing clients or studying, you’ll likely find me hanging out with my amazing husband and two kids – we love to travel together whenever we get the chance. I love to run the greenways of Charlotte, host movie nights with friends, and unwind with the latest reality tv series. Our family wouldn’t be complete without our chaotic but lovable furry friends – three cats and a dog who keep things interesting!
If you’re ready to begin this journey, or even just thinking about it, I’d be honored to walk alongside you!
My standard rate as an intern is $75. If that is a financial barrier for you, please share, as I can see people for a reduced fee or even pro bono!
This is how all therapists start!
An intern is in their graduate program and earning hours, all under the supervision of a graduate professor and Juliet. Juliet chose these interns because they have the “it” factor that you can’t teach a good therapist!

- Am I truly depleted and too busy today or am I avoid talking about something hard?
- What would make today’s session worth it, if I left with just one takeaway?
- Could I benefit from even just a shorter lesson or switching to telehealth rather than totally cancelling?
- If I skip this session, will I lose momentum and will it be harder to return?
- What topic am I most avoidant of talking about and what’s one sentence I could start with?
- If not therapy today, what’s my plan for support (journaling, practicing skills I’ve learned, calling a friend, etc.) and is that enough?
- Favorite musicals – Dear Evan Hansen, Six
- Favorite movies – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Groundhog Day, Triangle of Sadness
- Favorite bands/singers – Weezer, fun., Noah Kahan
- Favorite books – The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, The Great Believers
It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up. I’ve always been drawn to helping professions, and my years spent teaching in public schools showed me that the moments I loved most were the one-on-one connections – supporting students with social and emotional learning and conflict resolution.
Now, stepping into counseling, I feel genuinely honored every time someone trusts me with their story. I know I’m on the right path because I’m excited to keep learning and growing alongside my clients – and the work doesn’t even feel like “work.” It just feels right.
So I guess my why is simple: I’m finally in a place where what I do feels authentic, energizing, and deeply human – and it still amazes me that I get to call this my profession!
